Most ecommerce SEO advice is either too generic to act on or too technical to prioritize. This checklist is the one we actually run for clients — the same sequence that took an industrial supply store from 19 to 243 monthly organic visits in seven months. Work it top to bottom; the order matters.
Technical foundation
Nothing else works if crawlers cannot reach and render your pages efficiently.
- Crawl your own store. Run a full crawl and fix 404s, redirect chains, and orphaned pages first.
- One URL per product. Canonicalize duplicate paths — especially collection-based product URLs on Shopify and faceted URLs on other platforms.
- Tame faceted navigation. Filters and sorts can generate thousands of thin URLs. Noindex or canonicalize them before they eat your crawl budget.
- Core Web Vitals. Compress images, lazy-load below the fold, and audit app or plugin scripts. Speed is a ranking input and a conversion input.
- Product schema everywhere. Price, availability, and review markup — it powers rich results and the shopping surfaces AI engines pull from.
Keyword-to-page architecture
The highest-leverage move in ecommerce SEO is mapping real search demand to the right page type.
- Category terms go to collection pages, not blog posts. If people search for left handed golf clubs, that should be a collection URL.
- Build collections for demand that exists. Mine your search data and keyword tools for modifier patterns — material, use case, audience — and create collections to match.
- One intent per page. If two pages target the same term, consolidate them.
On-page for collections and products
- Collection page copy: 150 to 300 words of genuinely useful guidance above or below the grid, with the target term in the H1 and title tag.
- Product descriptions that answer questions: sizing, compatibility, materials, shipping. Copy pasted from the manufacturer ranks for nobody.
- Internal links flow downward: homepage to key collections, collections to subcollections and top products, blog content to all of it.
- Title tags sell the click: include the differentiator — free shipping, made in USA, lifetime warranty — not just the keyword.
Content that pulls shoppers in
Buying guides, comparisons, and how-to content capture shoppers before they know what to buy — then route them to collections. Our LLM SEO guide covers how this same content earns citations in AI answers, which is where a growing share of product research happens.
Authority
- Earn links with original data, expert commentary, and digital PR — never bought placements.
- Get listed where your buyers compare options: niche directories, gift guides, best-of roundups.
Measure what matters
Track organic revenue by landing page, not just rankings. A collection page climbing from position 9 to 4 should show up in sales — if it does not, the page has a conversion problem, not an SEO problem.
